What is Sleepio?

Sleepio is a digital sleep improvement programme created by world sleep expert, Professor Colin Espie, and grounded in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).

Over 6 weekly online sessions, a range of cognitive and behavioural techniques are introduced, designed to help people get their schedule, bedroom, lifestyle and thoughts into shape.

These techniques are personalised to each individual and proven to help people make the changes necessary to get to sleep faster, stay asleep through the night and feel better during the day.

What can I expect?

The Sleepio programme is a self-help programme which you can complete at a time and place that suits you. Each week there are weekly sessions which take 20-25 minutes to complete. Between sessions you are invited to complete a sleep diary, to help track your progress – this takes less than a minute each day.
If you access Sleepio with iCope, you will have a support worker who will check in at the start of the programme, and every two weeks, to see how you are finding it.

What is the evidence that Sleepio works?

Sleepio is based an established evidence-based therapy, called Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for insomnia.

The Sleepio programme has been tested in multiple ‘Randomized Controlled Trials’ or ‘RCTs’. The results of these trials show that the techniques taught during the program help people learn to fall asleep faster, spend less time awake during the night, and wake up feeling more refreshed.

Additional benefits associated with Sleepio include having more energy during the day, reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression, and improved productivity.

SilverCloud is an evidenced based online programme that helps teach skills based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.  It looks at thoughts and behaviours, and offers a wide range of activities to support you in making practical changes to help you improve your mood and anxiety.  Alongside this you will be offered six regular reviews with a therapist.  The first and last will be over the telephone and the others will be completed online.

Once you have an account you can download the SilverCloud app which allows you to access the programme anytime, anywhere, on any device that has an internet connection e.g. computer, smartphone, tablet. SilverCloud is therefore an ideal option for people who may have difficulty attending regular appointments away from home e.g. full-time workers, parents, carers. It provides a flexible way for you to access support.

Each session can be done independently (pure self-help) or with the feedback of a therapist (guided self-help) and even after you have completed treatment you will have access to the programme for an entire year. This allows you the opportunity to recap the sessions which can help maintain progress and prevent setbacks. The pure self-help option can be a particularly good first step before receiving any formal therapy. It is also a stand-alone treatment in its own right that can be accessed with minimal waiting time.
